About
Jekyll is a static site generator that is blog-aware and simple to use. It's written in Ruby, and was created in 2009 by the co-founder of GitHub. Since then, Jekyll has been powering tens of thousands of static sites all over the world! It's used by such companies and projects as GitHub, the US and French Government and many more companies.
Jekyll is a fully-featured static site generator (and one of the first ones!), meaning it supports all kinds of file formats, and is especially good for quickly and smoothly creating a blog. With first-class support for Markdown, and the Liquid templating language, making a blog is as easy as running two commands! Due to GitHub Pages, deployment is no problem, too, and there exists a wide array of third-party tools to make the Jekyll experience even smoother.
Jekyll is here to stay, and our team of Core maintainers is working hard to ensure that it does. However, nobody is currently being paid for this work, meaning that everybody here dedicated a big chunk of their free time towards making sure that Jekyll is the best it's ever been. Particularly, with the imminent release of Jekyll 4.0, we have lofty goals, so anything would help to keep us going!
In the future, we would also like to work on other things that will improve the Jekyll ecosystem. Here's a couple of ideas:
- Create a comprehensive official plugin and theme directory site
- Improve tooling built around measuring and improving Jekyll's performance
- Improve maintenance for official plugins
- Including the community into official decisions; making Jekyll more friendly to folks in the community
